A small group of SocialEyes diners came together on a cold and showery afternoon in March to experience the hearty, wholesome delights of the Ukrainian Sunflower. The friendly atmosphere and tasty food at this unique Wednesbury restaurant soon warmed us up and we even had the whole place to ourselves. Traditional music played in the background as we all got chatting.

Once we had settled down, our host offered us a variety of drinks, which included sweet and dry white Ukrainian wine and a mixture of beers, among other alcoholic beverages. Kelly, SVI’s Enablement Worker, asked us all to smile for the camera and say ‘Budmo! which is ‘Cheers!’ in Ukrainian.
We had pre-ordered our meals and they soon arrived. The food, well, some people would say plain but homely. Wholesome creamy mash or scrummy herb seasoned new potatoes served with Stroganoff or chicken Kiev. Some people had the beef Stroganoff, which they said was good. Sandra enjoyed potato and mushroom Verenyky, a vegetarian option. Others tried out the Holubtsi and Pelmeni, all washed down with Ukrainian beer or wine. Puddings were to die for, so tasty and enough in one serving to satisfy a hungry family.

Sonia, SVI member, said: “I had chicken Kyiv, which was tasty. It was a pleasant, convivial afternoon, which was enjoyed by all.”
Sandra, SVI’s Development Worker, said: “Such a lovely meal out. The service from Julie and her team was fantastic, so welcoming and friendly. What more can I say other than it’s a fantastic find for me. When I go back and I will, next time in the evening, I’ll definitely try the home made vodka and take part in one of their knees up nights.”
We enjoyed the decor too, which Kelly described to us. It gave a traditional rustic feel to the place.

Another successful and interesting meal out for our SocialEyes group.
