SVI Rocks

SVI Rocks: Turning Up the Volume on Creativity and Inclusion.

This autumn, Sandwell Visually Impaired (SVI) members swapped autumn blues for rock anthems with the launch of the SVI Rocks project. Running from October to November, the initiative brought together our keen SVI musicians and their guide dogs for six weeks of uplifting and creative workshops.

n the SVI office, seven SVI members rehearse vocals, keyboard, and percussion with Rodrigo, who leads from the front on his electric guitar. They are preparing for their upcoming performance at the SVI AGM and 20th anniversary celebration

Building on the success of Brum Rocks, virtual choir and drumming workshop the project was designed to empower members to sing, play, and make their own arrangements of rock classics. Under the guidance of Argentinian musician Rodrigo Orquera of Misfits Music, the SVI office was transformed into a rocking rehearsal space where participants practiced their instruments, collaborated on songs, and nurtured their inner rock stars.

“The atmosphere during sessions was warm and friendly,” said project manager Sarah-Ann. “Rodrigo created an environment that encouraged experimentation and improvisation, allowing participants to fearlessly own the music.”

Making the Music Happen

The project was brought to life thanks to funding from Music For All, who funded Roderigo, wooden shakers and accessibility training for Rod. SVI team members Sandra, Pam, and Sarah-Ann worked tirelessly to secure a mix of funding, ensuring the project could include an accessibility resources page for creatives interested in engaging visually impaired audiences. The page will include Info-Casts by Sarah-Ann discussing Visually Impaired and Guide Dog etiquette, an interview with Roderigo reflecting on his experience, a chat with Steve from Black Country Touring and downloadable resources.

A core ensemble of 10 participants formed the heart of SVI Rocks. From singing hits like “Sweet Child of Mine” to “Knocking on Heaven’s Door”. Bill, who hadn’t sung since his school days, stepped into the role of lead vocalist, earning praise from his guide dog Morse, who lay in the best and traditionally most expensive audience spot among the performers!

The Big Gig

The program culminated in a performance at SVI’s 20th Anniversary AGM on November 18, drawing an impressive audience of 100 plus people.  Audience member Graham said, ‘The band was amazing! I’m sure they got more than just my toes tapping. Great stuff—hope they’ll be rebooked!’

In Portway Lifestyle Centre 7 SVI Rocks members prepare for their gig at the SVI AGM and 20th anniversary. They are seated with instruments, including guitar, ukulele, keyboard, snare drum and box cajon.

Sarah-Ann says “It means a lot to me that my 6 year old heard Sweet Child of Mine for the first time—not by Axl Rose, but sung by SVI Rocks. She was humming it all week!”

Kiran, part of the SVI Rocks rhythm section, said, ‘Rod and Sarah-Ann showed excellent ability in engaging the whole ensemble in preparing, organising, and delivering the concert.’

Rodrigo said “I think, if I’m being honest, it’s been one of the best experiences I had in, if it’s not in forever, it’s since I started doing this kind of work.  I’m very grateful for the opportunity.”

SVI Rocks proved to be such a success that participants are eager to continue.  The Rock ensemble and SVI Team is determined to expand and to encourage more members to discover their musical talents.

As Rodrigo said, “Let it all out and free your inner rock star!”
