Brum Rocks hits SVI

It started off as a usual Wednesday afternoon but the air was full of anticipation of beautiful music.

Members of SVI were gathered for a session with Rod and Jim from Brum Rocks. This project has been set up to bring together people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy music workshops. These will be assembled into a final celebratory performance at the SVI Open Meeting in July at Portway Lifestyle Centre.

Rod began by easing everyone in gently with a few vocal exercises before starting with the first song.  He talked all present through various ways of interpreting the song, from gentle singing to heavy rock in the chorus, and encouraged people to let go their inner rock star. Various instruments accompanied, including keyboard and guitars together with shakers and handclapping, revealing the many talented people who are a part of SVI.

Sandwell Visually Impaired community members and dog Amber cluster together in the SVI room, smiling and holding their guitars, a ukulele, a keyboard, shakers, and drums, while singing the Beatles. In the middle of them, music director Rod and musical assistant Jim from Brum Rocks triumphantly wave a microphone and an egg shaker.
Rod, Jim and participants unleash their inner rock stars.

After a short break a second song was tackled. This again gave an opportunity to ‘let it all out’ in the chorus. Everyone really enjoyed the session, jamming, shaking and clapping to their heart’s content.

Rod and Jim were impressed how the group had managed to gel in such a short space of time. Jim sent us an email later, saying: “I wanted to send an email to say how much we loved running the session yesterday with your group. Rod and I came away feeling so inspired and full of music, it was really special! ”

All in all a wonderful afternoon was had by all.

As this workshop was so popular, this will not be the last one.  SVI plan to arrange our own sessions in the near future and we will keep all posted on further details.
