Be Fearless: A journey of confidence and calm

The recent Be Fearless workshops, led by award-winning conductor and opera singer Sarah-Ann Cromwell, were a joyful experience for participants. This six-week series, hosted by SVI, was designed to help members build inner confidence, reduce anxiety, and learn practical tips for managing fear—all whilst having a bit of fun along the way.

SVI members and Sarah-Ann take a break from the Be Fearless course. Lots of smiley faces, a thumbs up and a peace sign.

Throughout the workshops, Sarah-Ann introduced a variety of techniques, from “angel breathing”—a posture and breathing exercise to promote calm and focus—to explaining the science behind how our brains function in stressful situations. She even brought in a 3D model of the brain, crafted from air-dry clay and spray varnish, to help participants visualise the parts involved in confidence, stress, and decision-making.

Participants learned about the importance of posture in promoting confidence, adopting power stances, and how singing can release “feel-good” hormones like dopamine and oxytocin, helping to reduce stress. Singing was a central element of the workshop, with members sharing the song with family and friends outside the sessions, and one participant even composing a new tune with the lyrics.

The final session ended with a discussion on how to use these skills in life outside of the workshops, focusing on elements like joy, purpose, movement, and community. Sarah-Ann expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to work with the group, noting that the insights gained will shape how she runs future sessions. A good time was had by all.

What people said about the workshops

Participants clearly enjoyed the workshops and got a lot out of them. Here’s just a small selection of the feedback that SVI gathered.

“I feel buzzing from all the things I’ve learned about.”

“I feel great and enthused by the session – I feel more confident.”

“I’m enjoying the company of nice, friendly people’.” “I love being with the others and look forward to the sessions.” ”

“Absolutely brilliant – I’ve made some new friends’

“SVI is a group that gets things done.”

“The old me (pre sight loss) has come back again.”

“Previously I wouldn’t have said things out loud in a group before.”

“It’s helped me control my panic attacks.”

“I’ve been so proud to have travelled the journey here on my own – for the first time!”

We were told that friends and relatives had noticed a difference too.

Support, Empowerment and Experience (SEE)

The workshops were part of SVI’s SEE programme. This is funded by Sandwell Council’s Healthy Sandwell. The aim of the Be Fearless course was to build assertiveness and confidence.
