March open meeting a resounding success

SVI’s March open meeting was an event of two very different halves: a showcase of drumming, followed by a discussion of forthcoming welfare benefit changes. There was  something for everyone.  SVI members, friends and volunteers who turned up at Portway Lifestyle Centre on the day all agreed it was time well spent.

The drumming showcase was the finale of SVI’s Creative Change Drumming project, led by professional drummer Mendi Singh. Mendi said: “The main objective of the project was to teach participants how to play rhythms on everyday objects and create their own digital music tracks.”

You can listen to some of their music here.

SVI members who had taken part entertained their audience with a live performance followed by a set of their own pre-recorded tracks.  What a talented bunch! There was foot-tapping, and even some dancing in the aisles.  We will bring you more about the project in its own news article soon.

Hardev Sandhu, Welfare Rights Officer, takes questions

The second half focused on the forthcoming transition to Universal Credit (U.C), which is to take place in Sandwell shortly. Hardev Sandhu, Sandwell Welfare Rights Officer, gave some background. He explained how the migration of existing benefits to UC, for people of working age, would affect people in general terms. This was followed by a popular Q&A session, where SVI members were able to ask questions about how it would affect them.

Additional speakers at the event were SVI’s new Advocacy and Information Coordinator, Sue Bloomer, and long-standing SVI member Dan Letchford. Sue talked about her role and the new Support, Enablement and Experience project. (More on that to come.) Dan said his goodbyes to all his friends as he is leaving Sandwell and moving to pastures new. We wish him all the very best.

The meeting was ably chaired by SVI’s Vice Chair, Richard Flatley. SVI Trustees Gina and Helen ran a raffle with lots of prizes, which raised £113 for SVI.

Thank you to all the volunteers who made the drinks and ensured that everyone could get the most out of the afternoon. And not forgetting SVI’s hard-working staff team who made everything possible.
