News from the SVI office, 9 November 2015

By SVI Development Worker, Sandra Troth

Hello everyone! Over the past few weeks people have told us that they would like to know more about what’s been happening or is about to happen at SVI. This is the second of a new series of regular updates which will be on the website and in the Sandwell Talking News.

Annual Forum

We are still very busy at the SVI office preparing for the Annual Forum. Almost everything is done now and this week the confirmation letters have been sent out to members. If you have said you would like to attend the SVI Annual Forum but haven't received your confirmation letter by Wednesday 18 November, please call us to check that you are on our list.

The Annual Forum is on 23 November and promises to be interesting with our guest speaker Blind Dave Heeley telling us all about his recent adventure challenges, as well as exhibitors, workshops and a chance to catch up with old friends.

Macular Group

Last Wednesday Pam (who uploads the Talking News to the SVI website) and I went along to the Macular group at West Bromwich Town Hall. We demonstrated a Talking News player (boombox) and four new members signed up - a warm welcome to new listeners.

The Macular group meet every second Tuesday of the month from 11.30am to 1.30pm - they meet in West Bromwich Central Library and then go across to the Town Hall together. As well as monthly social meetings, they go on trips to places of interest - next week they are off to Burton Brewery, they're sure to have an enjoyable day and the lunch menu sounded delicious. To find out more about the Sandwell Macular group, you can either ring Bernard direct on 0121 525 2119 or call the SVI office on 0121 525 4810.

'Living with Sight Loss' and IT courses

Over the past couple of weeks we have been asked when 'Living with Sight Loss' courses might be starting in Sandwell. We are working with Action for Blind People and should have some news for you before the end of the year.

We also hope to have some more dates for Online Today workshops, which will target a range of IT skills and ability levels and will be smaller groups than the ones run a few weeks ago. Sunny, who leads the Online Today sessions will be at our Annual Forum to answer your IT questions and tell you all about smart phones and mobile devices.

Contacting the SVI office

We know that many of you call the SVI office to ask questions about services or to get support to access council or other provisions. Both Scott and I are part time so the office is often unstaffed, do bear with us and if you leave a message we will get back to you, so don't forget to leave your number on the answerphone.

Well, it's bye from me for now. Let me know what you would like to hear about SVI and we’ll try to answer your questions next time.

Please let us have your feedback by calling the office on 0121 525 4810 or email info@sandwellvisuallyimpaired.org.uk

Best wishes,

Sandra
