News from the SVI office, 3 November 2015

By SVI Development Worker, Sandra Troth

Hello everyone! Over the past few weeks people have told us that they would like to know more about what’s been happening or is about to happen at SVI. This is the first of a new series of regular updates which will be on the website and in the Sandwell Talking News.

Annual Forum

As November starts and the dark nights set in, we are busy at the SVI office planning for the Annual Forum, which this year is on Monday 23 November. If you haven’t booked your place already, give us a buzz at the office and we can add you to the list, but hurry as we need to know who is coming by the middle of November at the very latest. This year, we welcome local celebrity Blind Dave as our guest speaker, so it’s sure to be fascinating and a lot of laughs. Dave will be telling us all about his latest challenge in the Sahara. There’ll also be a range of exhibitors to visit and old friends to catch up with so do try to come along. You can find out more about the Annual Forum on our Calendar of Events.

'Living with Sight Loss' and IT courses

Over the past week we have been asked when ‘Living with Sight Loss’ courses might be starting in Sandwell. We are working with Action for Blind People on this and should have some news for you before the end of the year. We also hope to have some more dates for Online Today workshops, which will target a range of IT skills and ability levels and will be smaller groups than the ones run a few weeks ago. Sunny, who leads the Online Today sessions will be at our Annual Forum to answer your IT questions and tell you all about smart phones and mobile devices.

Contacting the office

We know that many of you call the SVI office to ask questions about services or to get support to access council or other provisions. Both Scott and I are part time so the office is often unstaffed, do bear with us. If you leave a message we will get back to you, so don’t forget to leave your number on the answerphone.

Fireworks and pets

I started by saying that we are now into November and with bonfire night and Diwali celebrations going on, there are lots of fireworks around, so for those of us with guide dogs and pets it can be a worrying time. We can’t stop the fireworks, nor would we really want to do so, but take extra time with your pets and give them an extra hug to reassure them. If your pet gets really anxious, talk to your vet who should be able to advise.

And finally...

Happy Guy Fawkes and Diwali from Sandra and the SVI team

By the way, does anyone know where to buy bonfire toffee from these days?

Well, it's bye from me for now. Let me know what you would like to hear about SVI and we’ll try to answer your questions next time.

Please let us have your feedback by calling the office on 0121 525 4810 or email
