Eye Health Week makes an impact

Sight matters, so don't turn a blind eye to sight loss.

SVI at Sainsburys Blackheath

With help from our friends, we visited five stores in Smethwick, Blackheath, Cradley Heath, Oldbury and Great Bridge Tipton. We had a total of 14 volunteer helpers throughout the week and raised £560.94 towards SVI activities and services. This on top of our great fund raising day at Morrisons Wednesbury a few weeks ago.

Eye Health Week is about raising awareness, so it's about far more than raising funds. During the week, we gave out all of the Vista eye care magazines and lots of information about eye care and the importance of taking a regular sight test. We handed out SVI information to people who already had sight problems and chatted to lots of people about their eyes and what services are available to help them.

During the run up to National Eye Health Week we worked with our friends at Sandwell Council, making videos of members talking about how their sight affects them and why it's important to look after your eyes. During the week itself, these videos were put out on Healthy Sandwell social media (Facebook and twitter). Sandwell Council social media also shared them through their accounts to help raise the profile of avoidable sight loss.

Eye care messages were posted on the SVI Facebook page and group and our website included the calendar of the week. Like me, lots of our members shared the message about avoidable sight loss through their friends networks.

Watch out for our upcoming World Sight Day campaign at Tesco West Bromwich coming up on 10 October.

A big thank you to everyone who helped us during our National Eye Health Week Campaign. We couldn’t do the great things we do without you all!
