VI Digital Festival – iSandwell Programme

We would like to invite you to our iSandwell-funded, VI Digital Festival workshops on Friday 18 May and Friday 15 June 2018

Both workshops will be taking place at West Bromwich Town Hall and are very different, so please read on to find out more.

The iSandwell Programme is run by Sandwell Council to encourage more people to gain confidence in using technology, like smart mobile phones, tablets and computers. As technology moves forward, we do need to look at how these devices can make life easier for people living with sight loss.

Join us for one or both of our free workshops. Your transport costs can be met if you have a receipt for your journey and live in the Borough of Sandwell. If you don’t live in Sandwell you are also welcome, but we are unable to meet your travel costs.

VI Digital Festival Workshop 1 – Friday 18 May from 10am to 1.30pm at West Bromwich Town Hall, Room D

This is your ‘hands-on’ chance to find out what kind of equipment is available and what it can do for you. Meet the experts who will be there to share their knowledge and experience. Take the opportunity to ‘try before you buy’.

  • Ben Rendal from RNIB Online Today will talk about various aspects of mobile technology.
  • Get to grips with mobile devices, such as Apple and Android phones and tablets – what are your options? What are the pros and cons of each?
  • Watch demonstrations of various apps that can increase independence and mobility, such as the Seeing AI and Soundscape apps from Microsoft.
  • Humanware will showcase their stand-alone products.
  • Demonstration of Amazon products such as the Echo and Dot with Alexa.

At the end of the workshop you will have the option to take a short walking trip over to Edward Street Community Café as part of a demonstration of navigation and reading apps.  Please note that you will need to buy your own lunch from Edward Street if you choose to dine with us there.

VI Digital Festival Workshop 2, ‘Sandwell VI People's Digital Charter’ – 15 June from 10.30am to 3.00pm at West Bromwich Town Hall

Lunch will be provided.

Have you ever struggled to access information online? Do you want to help influence policy-makers in the Council and across the West Midlands? This event aims to ensure that the views and experiences of visually impaired people are taken seriously when developing digital policy.

The workshop will be broken down into sections where debates on various topics will be noted by a table facilitator and the feedback will be recorded via audio. A digital developer will document the findings from the day to create a 'Sandwell VI People's Digital Charter'. Taking an innovative approach, the developer will create an app in real time as the workshop progresses.

Workshop 2 is limited to 30 people, please book early to avoid disappointment

Contact the SVI Office by Wednesday 16 May on 0121 525 4810 or email us on to book your place on either or both of the workshops.
