Get in the swim for 2018

We wish you all a very happy, healthy and peaceful 2018. To get your new year off to a healthy start, read on for news about our two swimming programmes that are due to start this month. Swimming is a great way of keeping fit, and even trying it out by ‘dipping your toes’ and gaining confidence in the water will make exercise more fun and cause less strain on your body.

We have other activities planned for those of you who might not want to go in the water or want to try other things as well - visit our calendar of events to find out more.

Evening relaxed pool sessions

This session starts Tuesday 9 January from 6.30pm to 8pm in the therapy pool at the Portway Lifestyle Centre, Newbury Lane, Oldbury B69 1HE. This is a 10 week programme to give people who might not otherwise get the chance to use a pool to give it a try. It’s an informal session where you can just relax and gain confidence in the water or practice the first stages of learning to swim with one-to-one support from a swim buddy. Please contact us for more details and please feel free to bring a family member, friend or carer to support you if you want.

Are you a confident swimmer who would like to do lane swimming?

This session starts Wednesday 10 January from 2.30pm to 4pm at West Bromwich Leisure Centre, Moor Street, West Bromwich B70 7AZ This is a new stage of SVI and West Bromwich Leisure Centre’s swimming programmes for visually impaired people and we are inviting those of you who are already confident swimmers to join this 12 week programme. Swim buddies will be on hand to assist you in the changing room and in the main pool where lanes will be roped off for our use.

More information

To find out more or to register your interest, call the SVI Office on 0121 525 4810 or email – but do hurry if you wish to join the first session as these programmes start next week, but if you are unable to join us at the start you can always come along to future sessions.

Both swimming programmes are funded by the Community Activity Network [CAN] and are free to attend but we are unable to cover your travel costs.

We will be holding a sponsored swim in the spring to enable swimming sessions to continue beyond the end of the funding programme.

Sincere thanks to Oldbury and West Bromwich CAN for supporting us to offer these exciting water based activities.
