SVI Learn to Swim, Improver and Swimming Programme

Venue: West Bromwich Leisure Centre, Moor Street, West Bromwich B70 7AZ

SVI invites members and other visually impaired people to register to join our next ‘learn to swim, improver and general swimming programme’. Sessions will start with a meet and greet on Wednesday 13 September at 1.30pm to 3pm – this is your chance to meet the instructor, the volunteer buddies and of course our present swimmers. You can find out how the sessions work, what help is provided and ask any questions you have – you will not go in the pool on this initial session.

Pool sessions will start the following Wednesday 20 September from 2.30pm to 4pm.

You will have:

  • Free swimming instruction for up to 12 weeks.
  • The chance to continue swimming once your water confidence has increased.

These sessions will help you whatever stage you are at. Even if you have never been a swimmer, not swam for a long time or haven’t been in the water since your sight loss, this is just the thing to get you dipping your toes and building confidence to get in the pool, move around freely and become confident in the water.

You will be supported to improve your swimming skills, develop techniques and practice in the teaching pool with help on hand from volunteer swim buddies.

Final Step - Staying in the swim.

Once you are a confident swimmer, you might want to try lane swimming. This is a new stage of the programme, and we are inviting visually impaired people who are already confident swimmers to trial this aspect of the programme with us.

Swimming is a great way of keeping fit, and even trying it out by ‘dipping your toes’ and gaining confidence in the water will make exercise more fun and cause less strain on your body.

Find out more and register your interest

To find out more or to register your interest, call the SVI office on 0121 525 4810 or email info@sandwellvisuallyimpaired.org.uk. We will take your details, find out what stage you are at already and ask you a few questions about your health just to make sure that swimming is the thing for you. After that you will either start straight away or be put on to our waiting list.

Grateful thanks to the Community Activity Network [West Bromwich] which has funded the programme. Sessions are free but we are unable to meet travel costs for this programme.
